An Obstacle
When a family travels full-time for an extended length of time, there are people and things back home that we miss. Undoubtedly, the experiences we gain from long-term, full-time travel much surpass the challenging feelings of miussing my family while traveling and family; if not we wouldn't be doing it. However, it doesn't make it any easier or alter the reality that we miss them.
A Resolution
Fortunately, having family members visit you somewhere in the world is a way to deal with the problem of missing them. We did, along with a few of the folks we miss. We were really lucky that Martin's parents traveled all the way from Denmark to Thailand to spend a week with us since they were ready for a lengthy journey and wanted to visit and spend time with the grandkids.
A Rest
We didn't understand how badly we needed a vacation when this was scheduled, and we were still traveling to Thailand to meet up in a resort close to Krabi. A vacation from being tourists, from always traveling, from making fresh impressions each time we leave our lodging, and from constantly organizing our schedules of things to see, do, and go to.
A Present
Martin and I had a week to myself and some much-needed couple time while the kids slept in a room with their grandparents. It was a great week. We all spend much of our time in the same room when we travel full-time with our children, and as a couple, we certainly don't have much time to ourselves. Spending more time together as a family was one of the reasons we decided to travel full-time, and we wouldn't have it any other way. All parents, however, are aware that there are topics that are pleasant to discuss without the "long ears" of the kids next to you, so having our own room for a week was a wonderful present for all of us.
A Contented Family
Additionally, the children were overjoyed to get a vacation from their parents. Although we did spend the most of the day together, it was a joy to be able to retreat to our own room, which applies to both our children and us parents. We had a triple win-win situation since, to put it mildly, the grandparents were also quite pleased with this arrangement.
A Vacation
Not only were we all delighted to have a week-long vacation at the resort, but we also enjoyed cooking courses, spending time with the grandparents, and relaxing on the beach, in the ocean, and by the pool. It also provided us with a brief respite from our amazing journey and exploration. This week was beneficial to all three generations in a variety of ways.
5 Ways to deal with homesickness
For me, homesickness usually passes on its own, but for others, action is required. Here are some tips for overcoming homesickness.
1. Pay attention to the good.
I make an effort to see the good things about wherever I am. Keep in mind that you are only there temporarily. It will pass quickly, whether it is three months, six months, or a year. Sometimes it's necessary to stand back and assess your current situation. Appreciate the contrasts that may be causing your homesickness.
2. Avoid making too many calls home.
Whenever you miss them, don't call home! Trust me, even though my mother doesn't agree with this. It's very true, to be honest. You lose out on a lot in your new nation when you're always on Skype and giving your best back home. At the same time, though...
3. Stay in contact (since your mother is missing you).
Don't neglect your family and friends back home. They also miss you, so stay in touch! When you're longing home, sometimes all you need is a phone call to your loved ones.

4. Establish new friendships overseas.
The same motive has brought friends from all over the world to the same location as you. Friends and family can offer support, but they have no idea what it's like to miss home. Keep in mind that they [your new pals] probably feel the same way you do—they miss home!—and they depend on you just as much as you do on them. Who better than the individual who experienced it with you to discuss what transpired during that really unusual and culturally distinct moment? When you're homesick, this is a fantastic tactic.
5. Put your feelings in writing.
Maintain a journal! My notebook works well for reminding me that emotions are fleeting, but it's terrible at helping me recall what I was doing each day. After you've made a list of everything you miss about home, write a list of everything you've learnt while you left. Both happy and miussing my family while traveling.
