You shouldn't have to spend more than a few hours getting yourself to the weekend vacations Weekend Getaways East Coast residents like. Escaping the city grind is not difficult; only a few hours will allow roads, trains, and aircraft to carry you miles away and back in time for Monday morning. And all it takes is some forward planning—no extended holiday weekend or PTO required—when you're yearning for beaches, fresh mountain air, or simply a break from the routine of the workweek.
Why therefore waste the weekend binge-watching Netflix when you could spend it in a cabana on the famous pink-sand beaches of Bermuda or the ski slopes close to Burlington, Vermont? From wine tastings to crystal caves, there's an easy east-coast weekend escape for you regardless of your taste.
We have done the research for a wide spectrum of east-coast retreats to get you started.

Bermuda
There is nothing like a trip to the island of Bermuda for the ultimate change of scenery—think hammocks strung over turquoise seas, underground caverns, and an island vibe. And thanks to two-and- a- half hour daily flights from New York, an island vacation is more than reasonable. Of all the weekend trips the East Coast presents abroad, Bermuda is the most dreamlike.
Rent a scooter or hop in a taxi to visit Bermuda's best, prominent names include Elbow Beach, Horseshoe Bay Beach, and Warwick Long Bay; the pink sand stretches on this island are unique. Explore the other part of the island after your round of beach activities. Blue Hole Park, where walking paths wind coastal cliffs, caverns, and lagoons, and Bermuda's spectacular subterranean caves—don't miss Crystal and Fantasy Caves—showcase Active visitors can kayak around the island's shores or walk, run, or bike a portion of the 18-mile Bermuda Railway Trail.
Charleston, Carolina
Charleston offers the lovely world of cobblestone streets, pastel antebellum homes, and waterfront promenades. From New York City, this surreal getaway is a quick two-hour flight, two and a half hours from Boston.
Spend the day discovering the sophisticated French Quarter, Charleston's historic walled city, home of the famous City Market from the 19th century. Before spending the afternoon exploring the city's museums, you may pick up distinctive apparel, crafts, and artwork here; we suggest the Old Slave Mart Museum, where you can listen to an interview with a formerly enslaved individual on a rare audio recording. On a beautiful day, head to Waterfront Park on the Cooper River or get a ferry across the river to Fort Sumter, where the first Civil War rounds were fired.
Atlantic City, New Jersey
For those seeking a glamorous weekend, the "Las Vegas of the east" falls short. While New Yorkers can arrive in three hours by Amtrak and NJ Transit, NJ Transit carries passengers from Philadelphia in an hour-and-a-half. Both cities have even smaller drive times, and the Atlantic City International Airport is there for visitors arriving from more off.
Before savoring some tax-free shopping therapy, visitors can spend the day gaming at Borgata or the Hard Rock. Should you not enjoy gambling, the city's renowned beach calls. Spend some time sunbathing, surfing, kayaking, or windsurfing then stroll down the nearby boardwalk.
Massachusetts's Cape Cod
It's difficult to top Cape Cod, home to gorgeous beaches, seafood shacks, and lighthouses in the summer. Still, the town's moderate temperature, plenty of golf courses, and breweries and vineyards welcome guests even in the winter. East coast New Englanders can count on the Cape for beachy weekend vacations.
From Boston, the journey is slightly over an hour by vehicle or two-and- a-half hours via CapeFLYER, the weekend passenger train service. Given the travel to the Cape from New York City can take over five hours each way, you might choose to spend a long weekend. Still, the change in scene and tempo is well worth the journey.
Long Island New York
Long Island is among the easiest weekend escapes the Weekend Getaways East Coast has available to New Yorkers. Far beyond the visited boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens the island forks — with the Hamptons to the south and Long Island Wine Country to the north.
From the city, it's about a two-hour drive; most New Yorkers ride the Hampton Jitney or the Long Island Railroad (both about two hours each way). Booking a charter flight through Fly The Whale can bring you to the Hamptons in around 45 minutes for a far shorter travel day. Blade, a helicopter shuttle service running from Manhattan to East Hampton in approximately half an hour, offers even speedier options.
Once you're settled, start exploring. After a day lazing, you'll want to widen your horizons and take a ferry to the North Fork; the Hamptons are bursting with amazing parties and gorgeous beaches (don't miss Southampton's Coopers Beach). There's vistas of the Long Island Sound and wine from nearby vineyards while you sip; don't miss the delights at Corey Creek or Croteaux. If you have an evening open, schedule time to view a 1933 Art Deco-style theater, Suffolk Theatre.
Toronto, Ontario, in Canada
Less than two hours separate Toronto from the main Weekend Getaways East Coast cities: New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. And there's no reason to worry about long transfers; every location has direct flights for roughly $150.
The Canadian city lies northwest of Lake Ontario. Rent a bike and travel the Martin Goodman Trail, sometimes known as the Waterfront Trail, to gain your bearings. < You then will pass Ontario Place and the Harbourfront Centre from here. Should biking not appeal to you, visit the pedestrian-only Distillery Historic District. Set amid charming 19th-century buildings originally home to a sizable whiskey distillery, you will discover chic restaurants, pubs, and boutiques along with a variety of galleries and theaters.
Florida's Miami
Go south for a significant difference in culture and temperature. By plane, Miami's well-known nightlife, beaches, and cuisine are just hours from most major Weekend Getaways East Coast cities; less than three from Baltimore and little over three from New York City.
Arriving, you should head to the beach to take in the tropical environment. While Lummus Park Beach is a must for sunbathers and those looking for a relaxed day of people viewing, the picturesque Haulover Beach boasts lovely manicured dunes, picnic spaces, and great surf conditions.
Once enough sun has been absorbed, have lunch at Little Havana's Versailles Restaurant Cuban Cuisine. This is a real Miami restaurant and the place people go for Cuban cuisine. For seafood, head to La Mar by Gaston Acurio for trendy, waterfront dining with a Peruvian touch; Joe's Stone Crab in Miami Beach is not missed.
Kensnebunkport, Maine
As east-coast idealistic as it gets, this southern Maine coastal village is Long sandy beaches, a lighthouse from 1833, and little lobster-fishing communities abound throughout the town. By automobile, the town is ninety minutes from Boston; from New York City, slightly over five-hour travel. From Boston's South Station, the Amtrak Downeaster carries passengers to Wells, Maine; the Portland International Jetport is just thirty miles away.
Try your hand at surfing with a rental from Aquaholics Surf Shop, or rent a kayak or boat to get out on the ocean. See and stroll around the famous Goose Rocks Beach as well as the less-traveled Arundel Beach. From 1833, you can ride a boat to Goat Island, home of the operating Goat Island Lighthouse, or visit the Seashore Trolley Museum, the oldest and biggest mass transit vehicle museum worldwide.
Burlington, Vermont
If you must flee the heat of the city, think about a weekend excursion to northwest Vermont. From Boston, Burlington is slightly over three hours by automobile; it provides direct, one- and- a- half hour flights to New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.
The city welcomes bikers, and the Lake Champlain Bikeway winds around the whole lake. After you have developed an appetite, explore the Ben & Jerry's plant and treat yourself with enormous amounts of ice cream. From your Burlington base, investigate the neighbouring ski resorts of Smugglers' Notch Resort and Stowe Mountain Resort (both under an hour's drive away) in the winter.
